Robustness, recoverability and congestion in public transport networks

Description

This project addresses various aspects of congestion and robust design of public transport line systems by evaluating passenger waiting processes at line stations/stops and variability in inter-arrival times. The models developed take into account the level of demand given in the form of trip origin-destination matrices.

Objectives:

  1. Analysis and development of a model based on mathematical programming for the establishment of frequencies in public transport lines (urban bus and subway lines) in a context of dynamic demand that takes into account line congestion. The development of computationally feasible methods for dealing with large networks is contemplated.
  2. Development of simulation programs to evaluate the waiting processes of passengers at stations/stops of the lines, the waiting processes of units at stations/stops, the influence on the variability in the times between arrivals of units at stations/stops and also the effects of overlapping between consecutive arrivals at stops (bus-bunching).
  3. (in collaboration with UPM) Robust design model for commuter and metro networks, taking into account a set of disruption scenarios and their associated probabilities. The model contemplates that the probabilities are a function of the service demand of the designed network.
  4. Estimation of the dynamic demand between stations of public transport lines with special attention to commuter networks using Kalman filters.
