The Catalan company COORDINA, which specializes in GPS fleet location and mobile resources management and tracking, has recently become a sponsor of the inLab Talent Program of the UPC Barcelona School of Informatics. With this agreement this company intends to encourage practical training and the development of participating students’ talent and skills as well as to support the training programs related to Smart Cities and mobile applications so that well-trained professionals may one day join their innovating developing team.

Additionally, COORDINA has also signed a collaboration agreement with the UPC to provide the university, under inLab FIB’s supervision, with anonymized data obtained from the tracking of the vehicle fleets and mobile devices COORDINA manages throughout Spain, for them to be used in R&D projects related to smart mobility and transit information services (like the recently finished In4Mo).

Access to transit data is a key aspect in every management or information action performed on the system. Recent technological development has allows new ICT-based technologies to appear making data acquisition richer, varied and less costly and opening the door to a new range of systems and applications. One of the most relevant technologies has been the gathering of data of GPS-equipped vehicles (mainly location and speed in a certain instant). Unfortunately, even though these data have been around for years, open access to them has been, generally, forbidden to researchers due to commercial interests. The agreement with COORDINA will allow research teams in the UPC to have significant sets of raw data at disposal from which new models can be developed to achieve a more efficient treating of data and its use in estimating the state of the transit system, short term transit evolution prediction, dynamic computing of routes, fleet management support, etc.

COORDINA is a Catalan company, established in 2000 with the objective of developing advanced mobile resource management solutions and whose products are sold internationally. COORDINA was the first company to ever sell mobile positioning solutions in Spain and to ever offer a 100% Internet based solution for GPS fleet positioning using GPRS communications. Currently, it is still the only company that offers continuous mobile positioning solutions without the use of GPS. COORDINA relies on a top-notch developing team in order to overtake the rest of the businesses in the sector and to align its products with its next aim: to innovate to have more efficient and economic mobile solutions. Nowadays, COORDINA operates in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Mexico and Chile.
