Service for the use of interactive response devices on the North Campus

Description

The objective of this project is to provide the north campus schools with the necessary technology to introduce the use of interactive response devices in the teaching of subjects. The project also foresees the possible integration with Racó, Atenea and technological support for teachers.

The FIB, the School of Telecommunications and the School of Civil Engineering have reached an agreement to carry out a pilot project with the technology of the company Turning Technologies.

inLab FIB held a training session for all teachers interested in the use of interactive response devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops or remote controls) for teaching their subjects in June 2012.

The use of these technologies in teaching is already used in other universities around the world and has the following strengths:

  • Improved understanding of the topics.
  • Increase participation.
  • They encourage collaborative learning.
  • Increase student satisfaction.
  • They provide immediate and global feedback.
  • Increase student attendance and class preparation.
  • It allows the teacher to obtain objective data about the group-class.
  • It facilitates the collection and subsequent analysis of student responses.

To assess the feasibility of using Smartphone type devices in the classroom, a survey was passed to all enrolled students from the FIB Racó during the month of May 2012.

A 25.93% of responses were obtained (496 out of a possible 1913) and the results reflect that 93.75% of the students could use their own devices to answer possible questions from the teachers in class.

For the rest of the students, the possibility of a “loan” of interactive remotes during the whole term is being studied.

The distribution of smartphones at the FIB in May 2012 is as shown in the infographic below
