
Lluís Màrquez — Short Bio
Lluís Màrquez is an Associate Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC), where he served from 1993 to 2013 and rejoined in 2025. He is currently the Vice Dean of Planning and Strategy in Artificial Intelligence at the Facultat d’Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB).
From 2018 to January 2025, he was a Principal Applied Scientist and Team Manager at Amazon’s AWS AI Science Lab in Barcelona, contributing to several AWS products in the large language model space. Before that, he worked as a Principal Scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (ALT group) from 2013 to 2018 and as an Associate Professor at UPC from 2001 to 2013. His career spans academia, research labs, and industry.
Lluís earned his PhD in Computer Science from UPC in 1999 with a university distinction. His work centers on natural language processing and statistical machine learning, with over 180 publications in leading conferences and journals. He has demonstrated leadership in the field, having served as President of the European Chapter of the ACL and as General and Program Chair for major conferences like ACL, EMNLP and EACL. He has also held leadership roles in ACL-affiliated groups, including SIGNLL, and co-organized multiple international evaluation tasks at Senseval/SemEval and CoNLL. During his time in academia, he has supervised 8 PhD thesis and participated in 16 national and EU research projects, acting as site leader for ten of them, including technology transfer collaborations with industry.
Research Interests
His research focuses on NLP using statistical and deep learning methods, with substantial contributions to structure prediction tasks, such as syntactic and semantic parsing, aimed at multilingual language understanding. He has worked on machine translation and its evaluation, question answering, information extraction, summarization, and information verification.
At Amazon, he contributed to the development and alignment of large language models within the Bedrock framework, including work on safety guardrails and advanced reasoning capabilities. He has also explored broader Generative AI applications, such as automatic summarization of customer reviews.
