Lluís Màrquez is an Associate Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC), where he served from 1993 to 2013 and rejoined in 2025. He is currently the Associate Dean for Planning and Strategy in Artificial Intelligence at the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB).
From 2018 to January 2025, he was a Principal Applied Scientist and team lead at the AWS AI Science Lab at Amazon in Barcelona, contributing to various AWS products in the area of large language models. Before that, he worked as a Principal Scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (Arabic Language Technologies) from 2013 to 2018 and as an Associate Professor at UPC from 2001 to 2013. His career spans academia, research institutes, and industry.
Lluís earned his PhD in Computer Science from UPC in 1999 with honors. His work focuses on natural language processing (NLP) and statistical machine learning, with more than 180 publications in top-tier conferences and journals. He has demonstrated leadership in the field, having served as Chair of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and as General Chair and Program Chair of major conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, and EACL. He has also held leadership roles in ACL-affiliated groups, including SIGNLL, and has co-organized multiple international evaluation tasks at Senseval/SemEval and CoNLL. During his academic career, he supervised 8 PhD dissertations and participated in 16 national and European research projects, acting as site leader in ten of them, including industry-oriented technology transfer collaborations.

Research Lines
His research focuses on NLP using statistical and deep learning methods, with substantial contributions to structure prediction tasks such as syntactic and semantic parsing, oriented toward multilingual understanding. He has worked on machine translation and its evaluation, question–answering systems, information extraction, automatic summarization, and automatic fact verification.
At Amazon, he contributed to the development and alignment of large language models within the Bedrock platform, including work on safety mechanisms and advanced reasoning capabilities. He has also explored broader applications of generative AI, such as automatic summarization of customer reviews.
