Dynamic path sharing

Description

This project aims to minimize the number of single-occupant car trips by creating a tool that facilitates the sharing of private vehicles for carpooling at short notice.

This model is known as dynamic ridesharing and reduces the increasing costs to the user of daily car use, road congestion, fuel consumption and, therefore, emissions of polluting gases into the atmosphere.

To achieve this objective, a prototype system has been developed that efficiently manages information to enable drivers and travelers who share a common route to contact each other in a short period of time. The system’s capacity and acceptance by users and administrations has been evaluated by conducting a pilot test between two municipalities in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

Wireless communications technologies will be used to connect users (SMS, GPRS, 3G) and location technologies (GPS) installed in the cars.
