Simulation of the new Barcelona airport terminal

Description

The desire ofAENA to have a terminal that complies with IATA quality standards originated this capacity and flow study of the new airport terminal area that should allow defining rectifications in the construction design or the configuration of the initial processors of the new South terminal .

The study was composed of a first analysis at a high level that allowed collecting the large numbers of the airport – passengers, vehicles, departure and arrival flights, Hub connections,… – and a second analysis at a lower level to determine if certain areas of the airport -check-in desks, baggage collection, security controls, elevators,…- and processes -handling operations, hub connection, intermodal arrivals,…- were well configured -dimensions of the area, and dependencies and service time-.

This second study was carried out for three different days that allowed us to see how the airport’s demand would evolve in the short, medium and long term.

Objectives:

  • Modeled at the macroscopic level.
  • Modeled at the microscopic level.
  • Great complexity in controlling masses of interrelated objects.
  • Great conceptual difficulty and in the modeling and calculation requirements.
  • Complex online experimentation.
  • Representation module in virtual reality.
