Berta Torrents is a researcher at inLab FIB, where she participates in research and innovation projects. A graduate in Mathematics, specialising in Computer Science, she has furthered her training with a Master’s degree in Data Science at the UPC. In her professional career, she has collaborated with Microsoft in the field of query optimisation and the performance of graph databases.

Her approach to technology is marked by mathematical thinking, which leads her to question initial hypotheses, find relationships that are not obvious, and formulate solutions from different perspectives. She seeks to understand what lies behind every problem and how this knowledge can lead to more optimal solutions. Ultimately, she is driven by the possibility of going beyond known answers, asking new questions and opening avenues of research that expand what we can understand and do with technology.

Main projects participated

Cardinality estimation in relational databases is a well-studied problem, but graph databases rarely follow the uniformity and independence assumptions that these estimators make, and therefore lose precision.
