SkiTraces comprises a website and mobile app for iPhone and Android used for tracking and locating skiers within skiing resorts. The SkiTraces friends module allows skiers, their families and friends to find one another at any given time. Location information is provided by a reverse geocoding module which converts a point location (latitude, longitude) into readable information such as the name of a ski track or a lift of ski resort facilities.
The SkiTraces alarms module can send automatic alarms to a set of specified mobile devices whenever the skier has not moved during a specified period of time. In addition, SkiTraces generates statistics and a record of the user’s activity including the height and speed profile and other complex data such as the comparison of the different descent times of the same track.
Currently, skiTraces’ specific maps and services cover Europe and North America. The system uses the OpenStreetMap skiing geographical information, which has the map of most of the skiing resorts worldwide.
