Simulation of the implementation of a fleet of AGV in the production plant of El Prat

The production plant of the Damm group in El Prat de Llobregat is one of the first totally automated liquid canning and bottling companies. This process has been possible thanks to the integration of a fleet of automated guided vehicles (AGV) that optimize their movements to provide service according to the programmed daily production.

The optimization process is crucial for battery life and allows complying with the schedule. The simulated virtual factory allows to:

  • Evaluate the current planning and management algorithms
  • Test and validate communication protocols between the different transportation agents (AGV, Plant, Stowage)
  • Analyze the performance of the system within different working scenarios

Duration of the project
October, 2001 - March, 2002
Benefits for the client

Reduction of implementation risks:

  • Hardware in the loop: real-time communication with sensors and actuators of the system to allow or block the movement of the AGV depending on the status of the plant.
  • The AGV fleet had been idle for 3 years because of traffic management problems and a reliable installation in a period of 4 months was required.

Stochastic simulation model with the following components:

  • Movement of the AGV.
  • Access to stowage.
  • Loading / unloading in tables.
  • Model of the production system.
  • Process of arrival of trucks.
  • Real-time interaction with the planner and the manager.
