Study of a new triage model of “Hospital de Sant Pau”

Description

The “Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau” is a highly complex center that receives around 120,000 people annually for the emergency department.

The current emergency service protocol is as follows:

  • Once the patient enters the emergency room, they must go through a triage system.
  • The triage system allows to identify the patient’s level of urgency.
  • In Catalonia, the MAT system is currently used: a system that, through a series of questions, asked by a health professional, assigns the corresponding level of urgency. Levels can be:
    • Level I, Resuscitation: Situations that require resuscitation, with immediate life risk.
    • Level II, Emergency: of foreseeable life risk, resolution depends radically on time.
    • Level III, Urgency: Situations of urgency, of potential vital risk.
    • Level IV, Less Urgent: Situations of less urgency, potentially complex but without potential life risk.
    • Level V, Not Urgent: Non-urgent situations that allow a delay in care or can be programmed, without risk to the patient.

The distribution of patients within these groups is not homogeneous and an excessive concentration of patients within Level III has been detected. The inLab FIB will carry out a study and the development of a proof of concept of a new triage system. This system will prioritize patients within Block III to prevent waitings from negatively affecting them.
