Improvements in the management of interim storage

Description

Gráficas de Prensa Diaria (GPD S.A.) belongs to Grupo Zeta and it is the largest printing company in Spain dedicated to the cold-set printing of newspapers, magazines and advertising brochures.

The printing center, located in Parets del Vallès, has 6 rotary printing presses that allow printing 37,500 copies per hour reaching up to one million copies a day that are distributed in Catalonia, the Balearics and the Spanish East Coast.

The process of feeding paper to the presses was the bottleneck of this printing plant, which could cause delays in production and subsequent delivery to the distributor at peak times.

The aim of this study was to develop a simulation model to analyze the operation of interim storage and improve its efficiency by detecting, identifying, defining and implementing improvements in its management and / or operation.

Duration of the project
May, 2007 to December, 2007
Benefits for the client

The client was suggested to make improvements in the management of automatic stacker cranes at the interim storage. Once these improvements were implemented, the operational capacity was increased by 30%, as expected by the simulation, and interim storage was no longer the bottleneck of the printing plant.
