Tesla: Energy Optimization System for the FIB PC's

Description 

In the ICT sector it is booming interest in reducing energy consumption of computer systems in order to reduce the environmental impact they generate. An example of this evolution can be found in the recent emergence of the Green500 list, whose motivation is to measure the performance of supercomputers using other parameters beyond the speed, such as the number of calculations per watt. This pattern can also be seen in the new range of processors Intel Core M that are not performance-oriented but to provide a low power consumption.

Within the UPC itself, it is being hold an energy saving plan known as plaestalvi. With this program the college uses its ability to reach a large public of different technical fields between the centers and promotes progress in this framework. To succeed with this initiative, the UPC has promoted energy optimization projects, investments in energy efficiency and monitoring SIRENA system among others.

Seizing the opportunity, the inLab FIB has created a project with the aim of solving some problems in the energy context that is found in its work environment. One problem are the machines that stay unnecessarily lit all night. The second problem is associated with the staff doing telework that have to leave their machines turned on because there is no method to remotely start them.
