Robustness, recoverability and congestion of public transport networks

Description 

This project is focussed in the study of some aspects of congestion and robust design in Public Transport systems, evaluating the waiting times of passengers at stations/stops of the lines and the variability in inter-arrival times. The models take into account the level of demand using origin-destination trip matrices.

Objectives:

  1. Analysis and development of a mathematical programming based model to establish frequencies of public transport lines (bus and subway urban lines) in a context of dynamic demand to bear in mind the lines congestion. Development of computationally feasible methods for treating large networks is envisaged.
  2. Developing simulation programs in order to evaluate the waiting processes for passengers at lines stations/stops, waiting process of units at stations/stops, the influence on the variability in inter-arrival times of units at stations/stops and also the effects of overlap between consecutive stops arrivals (bus-bunching).
  3. (in collaboration with UPM) Model of robust network design and subway, which takes into account a set of disruption scenarios and their associated probabilities. The model considers that the odds are a function of services demand for the designed network.
  4. Estimating dynamic demand between stations of public transport lines with particular attention to local networks using Kalman filter.
